GPI Innovation Lab: Unlocking private-sector action for peatlands
At the UN COP 27, the Global Peatlands Initiative, together with partners Climate Catalyst and the Climate Champions Team, conducted the Breakthrough Lab “Catalysing action on protecting our game-changing ecosystem: peatlands”, bringing together various policymakers, businesses and other stakeholders to the table. At the breakthrough lab, one of the most critical challenges for action on peatland restoration was identified as unlocking finance through viable financing mechanisms that bring together private capital and businesses, and an enabling environment from policymakers.
To catalyse the action from the learnings of the breakthrough lab, the GPI, Climate Catalyst, and the Climate Champions Team are organising a “hackathon” workshop, bringing together the private sector with a problem approach to unlock the financial “deals” that are needed for peatlands conservation and restoration. This workshop aims to bring together companies from different sectors, and together with other stakeholders, get to the solution pathways available to unlock the capital and resources needed to protect and restore peatlands.
