The Peatland Breakthrough: Invite-only meeting for governments and donors

The Peatland Breakthrough is an urgent call-to-action that brings together public and private stakeholders around a shared vision to upscale and accelerate peatland conservation, restoration, and sustainable management worldwide through investments and actions.  

The Government of Peru committed to being the first Champion Country, announced during COP15 of the Convention on Wetlands, held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, in July 2025. 

This exclusive meeting, hosted by the Ministry of the Environment of Peru, and the Peatland Breakthrough partners, brings together Peatland Breakthrough Champion Countries and high-impact potential donors to learn about the Peatland Breakthrough and opportunities to shape the future of the global peatland agenda, in line with robust, science-based targets for achieving climate goals.  

To meet the Paris Agreement climate goals, drained peatlands must be restored and rewetted, and existing peatland carbon sinks must be conserved. Stopping further drainage is not sufficient. Achieving this requires mobilizing national and international stakeholders and resources that will be catapulted through a Peatland Breakthrough.    

The Breakthrough is currently in the initial Development Phase, focusing on building momentum, gaining public awareness, setting scientifically robust and widely accepted targets and principles, and engaging a wide range of stakeholders through inclusive processes. As part of this phase, top peatland experts from around the world are co-developing robust, science-based global targets. These six proposed targets and seven guiding principles (still under development) lay the foundations for impactful implementation beyond COP30, ensuring the Breakthrough actions will be credible, science-based and applicable across regions and sectors.
