New updated Venice Agreement 2024

Signed during a historic assembly on June 2, 2022, The Venice Agreement represents a commitment by peatland custodians from around the world to change the trajectory of the ecological and cultural management of these wetland ecosystems towards effective conservation.

By taking a bottom-up approach that recognizes local initiatives as key collaborators in the international process of peatland conservation, The Venice Agreement sets a new standard for the valuation and practice of protecting and restoring our planet’s peatlands at the local level.

On 2 June 2024 (World Peatlands Day), during the 2nd Venice Agreement annual gathering in Torres Vedras, Portugal, the Venice Agreement was updated to address new needs and values, while discussing governance and next steps. This updated Venice Agreement aims to inspire peatland custodians worldwide to embrace and implement these principles within their local contexts, fostering holistic and inclusive peatland stewardship that integrates protection, restoration, cultural values, sustainable livelihoods, education, and collaborative leadership, ensuring a thriving future for both peatlands and the communities that depend on them.
