Seventh GEF Assembly
Environmental leaders from 185 countries will gather in Vancouver, Canada for the Seventh Assembly of the Global Environment Facility from August 22-26. Building on recent diplomatic breakthroughs on biodiversity loss, toxic chemicals, and the high seas, the GEF Assembly will be a critical stocktaking for 2030 goals to end pollution and nature loss, combat climate change, and propel inclusive, locally-led conservation.
It is expected to include the launch of the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund, a new source of funding for protecting endangered species and their ecosystems globally. The GEF was selected to manage this new fund at the COP15 Convention on Biological Diversity summit in December 2022.
Ministers, government officials, business leaders, prominent environmentalists, leaders of GEF agencies and of the main environmental conventions, as well as youth, civil society representatives and Indigenous Peoples will have an opportunity to discuss solutions under the overarching theme of "Healthy Planet, Healthy People."
Some sessions will be livestreamed and added to the Program of Events when confirmed.

GLF Nairobi 2023 Hybrid Conference: A New Vision for Earth
The climate crisis is already impacting every corner of the Earth – and it’s taking a heavy toll on rural communities dependent on natural resources for their livelihoods. It’s time for a new vision.
This October, join us for a two-day hybrid conference to explore local solutions to the global climate and biodiversity crises.
Day 1 focuses on African Sovereign Solutions. Find out how the continent can create a prosperous and sustainable future.
Day 2 will be all about climate. Join us in crafting a Survival Guide for a Planet in Crisis and set the stage for a fairer world ahead of the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP28).
This conference will amplify the voices we need the most at this critical time: leading scientists, activists, Indigenous leaders, financiers, women, youth, policymakers, private sector and more.
World Bog Day 2023
Bog Day is celebrated around the world every year on the fourth Sunday in July. This year we will be celebrating the brilliance of bogs on Sunday 23rd July 2023.
This annual event, in celebration of bogs, fens, swamps & marshes is an opportunity to raise awareness of peatlands – the benefits they provide, the threats they face and the ways we can all help protect them.
There are still plenty of opportunities to find out about peatlands and the work being done to protect and restore them. See the Events pages or Peatland Project Map of IUCN UK Peatland Programme to find out about a peatland near you.
If you have peatland resources or upcoming events you would like to share to help celebrate Bog Day please contact info@iucn.org.uk.
Launch of the Peatland Atlas 2023
The Peatland Atlas 2023 highlights background information from different regions and provides options on how decision-makers and society can act now. The publication by the Michael Succow Stiftung, partner of the Greifswald Mire Centre, BUND - Friends of the Earth Germany and the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, in cooperation with the Global Peatland Initiative, is going to contribute to a broad social debate on challenges and potentials of peatland conservation, restoration, and sustainable use in Europe and globally.
What are the drivers of worldwide peatland losses? What are drained peatlands used for? What are the local and global impacts of peatland destruction? What policy measures are necessary to protect peatlands? These are the questions we will discuss with our guests from science, politics, and civil society.

AGU23 Fall Meeting
For more than 100 years the American Geophysical Union has been opening science—opening pathways to discovery, opening greater awareness to address climate change, opening greater collaborations to lead to solutions and opening the fields and professions of science to a whole new age of justice equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging.
This year, as we convene >25,000 attendees from 100+ countries in San Francisco for AGU23, our theme is: Wide. Open. Science. 2023 might be the official year of Open Science but we also see it as an opportunity to affirm AGU’s overarching values and beliefs. It is a message for all of us to carry as we come together to share, inspire, collaborate, engage and most of all rededicate ourselves as a united community grounded in wide open science.
