14th European Conference on Ecological Restoration: Bridging Science, Practice, and Policy of Nature Restoration
SERE2024 is an international conference organised by the European Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration (SERE), taking place in Europe every two years. During the last week of August 2024, everyone working on the science, practice, and policy of ecological restoration will come together in Estonia, Tartu, to share knowledge and discuss the future of European nature.
Ecological restoration is a topic that holds a prominent place on both political and scientific agendas. The decline in biodiversity demands our urgent attention, and degraded ecosystems around the world require an effective and knowledge-driven path to recovery. The EU is actively working on the Nature Restoration Law, and in 2024, new and ambitious goals and actions to reverse biodiversity decline in Europe will be agreed upon.
The SERE2024 conference in Tartu will serve as an excellent meeting point during this crucial time to develop the most effective approaches for the long-term recovery of nature. It offers an opportunity to foster the reciprocal exchange of ideas, knowledge, and experiences among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from across Europe. The sessions will cover topics ranging from the theory and practice of restoring various ecosystems (wetlands, grasslands, forests, rivers, agroecosystems, urban and marine ecosystems) to the socioeconomic and political contexts of ecological restoration. Special focus will be put on discussions focused on the development of national restoration plans under the new EU law.
Sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity
The 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will convene in October – November 2024. The 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties (MOP) to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CP-MOP-11) and the fifth MOP to the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of the Benefits Arising from their Utilization (NP-MOP-5) will also convene.
UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 29)
The 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 29) will convene in November 2024. It will include the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 29), the 19th meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 19), and the sixth meeting of the COP serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA 6) that will convene to complete the first enhanced transparency framework and the new collective quantified goal on finance, among other matters. The 61st sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA 61) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI 61) will also meet.
14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP14)
The 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP14) is set to take place in the historic city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 12 to 17 February 2024.
The conference will be convened under the slogan, "Nature knows no borders", which, along with the logo, is a reminder that the journeys of migratory species do not adhere to political boundaries, and that their survival is dependent on international collaboration and transboundary conservations efforts.
CMS COP14 is a significant international meeting where governments, scientists and stakeholders will come together to agree on strategies for the conservation of migratory species and their habitats.
This meeting will be one of the most significant global biodiversity gatherings since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (Biodiversity Plan) in 2022, and will address a wide range of important conservation priorities and new initiatives, including many that will support the implementation of the GBF. The triennial international meeting will highlight the issues of habitat conservation and restoration as well as threats to species such as overexploitation, habitat loss and fragmentation, pollution and climate change. It will also provide a unique opportunity for the launch of major new reports and guidelines, including the first-ever report on the ‘State of the World’s Migratory Species’, new global guidelines on light pollution, and best practices for linear infrastructure to minimize impacts on migratory species.
COP14-associated events and meetings such as the 54th Meeting of the CMS Standing Committee, the High-Level Segment will take place in the same location on 11 February. The Migratory Species Champion Night will take place in the evening of the first day of the COP, on 12 February.

World Water Day 2024
The theme of World Water Day 2024 is ‘Water for Peace’.
When we cooperate on water, we create a positive ripple effect – fostering harmony, generating prosperity and building resilience to shared challenges.
We must act upon the realization that water is not only a resource to be used and competed over – it is a human right, intrinsic to every aspect of life.
This World Water Day, we all need to unite around water and use water for peace, laying the foundations of a more stable and prosperous tomorrow.
